Upholstery Tips & Techniques
Understanding Double Rub Counts
The double rub test measures fabric durability--how many times fabric can be rubbed before showing wear. For upholstery fabrics, here’s what the numbers mean:
15,000 double rubs: light residential use (accent chairs, ocassional seating)
30,000+ double rubs: heavy residential use (sofas, family room furniture)
50,000+ double rubs: commercial-grade (restaurants, hotels, high-traffic spaces.
Our performance fabrics regularly exceed these standards, giving you confidence in every project.
Choosing the Right Fabric Weight
Fabric weight affects both durability and workability. Heavier fabrics (12+ oz per yard) work well for upholstery with clean lines, while lighter fabrics (8-10 oz per yard) are easier to manipulate for tufting and curves. When in doubt, request samples to feel the weight and drape before committing to yardage.
Pattern Matching Basics
Matching patterns requires extra yardage--typically 10-20% more depending on pattern repeat size. Larger repeats need more fabric to ensure proper alignment. Always check the pattern repeat measurement before calculating your yardage needs, and don’t hesitate to call us if you need help figuring out how much to order.
