The Blue Mind - What Effect Does Water and Blue Have on You?

Written by Tiffany Tolliver

Almost there, you can see it.  The pale blue horizon comes closer with each step.  Sand crumbles between your toes as the breeze wisps by gently caressing you with the scent of the fresh ocean air.  You walk into the water.  With each step, you leave behind worries until you look back at the shore completely detached from the stresses of life and are completely enveloped by the soothing waters that surround you.  Your mind is in a different place.  You can’t describe it.  You simply exist.

This is called the “blue mind.”  Marine biologist, Wallace J Nichols has spent years studying this state of mind.   It is “a mildly meditative, relaxed state that we find ourselves in when we are in, on or under water,” states Eric Niiler in his article, “Blue Mind" explores the calming effect that water has on people.”

It is a scientific fact that water has a calming effect on the mind.  Doctors, in centuries past, prescribed ocean voyages and beach vacations as medicine for their patients.  Water affects all five of our senses, but it affects even more than that.  It changes our state of mind taking our subconscious to a state of relaxation.  We play sound machines for our kids with the sound of ocean waves and rain falling.  For this same reason, people choose relaxing spa blues for their homes in wall color, décor, and fabric.
